Founded in 1954, the Galway International Oyster Festival is the world’s longest-running oyster festival and a defining celebration of the city’s seafood heritage. Three days of oyster-opening competitions, gourmet seafood, live music, and a famous masquerade ball make this one of the most distinctive festivals in the European calendar. It’s a brilliant late-September weekend that captures Galway at its most characterful and the weather is often surprisingly kind.

Where it happens. The festival marquee is traditionally set up on Nimmo’s Pier near the Spanish Arch, around 8 minutes’ walk from The House Hotel. Additional events spread across restaurants, bars, and venues throughout the Latin Quarter, putting our hotel right at the heart of festival weekend.

Where to stay. A two- or three-night weekend stay works perfectly. Book by late summer for the best room availability as the festival weekend fills up quickly. Our location in the Latin Quarter means you’re walking distance from every event and from the city’s best seafood restaurants outside the festival itself.

Insider tip. Book your seat at the World Oyster Opening Championship well in advance,  it’s the festival’s signature event and tickets are limited. For something more relaxed, the Saturday morning oyster-tasting trails through the Latin Quarter are a brilliant way to experience the festival without committing to a single ticketed event.

Ireland’s funniest comedians take over Galway for a week of laugh-filled nights at venues across the city, alongside touring international acts who treat the festival as one of the highlights of their calendar. From major theatre headliners to late-night club shows and emerging-talent showcases, the programme covers every flavour of comedy. The atmosphere across the city during festival week is genuinely infectious even the bars not officially involved feel busier and brighter.

Where it happens. Headline shows take place at the Town Hall Theatre and the Róisín Dubh, with smaller club shows scattered across pubs and venues throughout the city centre. The Róisín Dubh is around 10 minutes’ walk from The House Hotel; the Town Hall Theatre is around 7 minutes. Most festival venues are within easy walking distance, making it possible to fit two or three shows into a single evening.

Where to stay. Comedy Festival weekends fill up quickly. A two-night Friday-Saturday stay is the most popular choice, but midweek shows are often where the best surprise acts appear. Book early for weekend dates and consider midweek for value. The festival also coincides with school mid-term break for many Irish families, so weekend availability tightens further than usual.

Insider tip. Don’t only book the names you recognise. Galway Comedy Festival has a long history of programming acts the year before they break through to mainstream audiences, taking a chance on a smaller club show is often where the festival’s most memorable nights happen. Pre-book a late dinner reservation; comedy nights run late and city-centre restaurants get busy.

The Macnas Halloween Parade is unlike anything else in Ireland. The Galway-based street performance company creates an extraordinary procession of giant puppets, costumed characters, lighting design, and live music that winds through the city centre in late October. Tens of thousands line the streets every year, locals and visitors alike, and the atmosphere is genuinely magical. If you’re in Galway for one evening this October, make it this one.

Where it happens. The parade route runs through the heart of the city centre, typically passing through Eyre Square, Shop Street, and the Latin Quarter. Standing anywhere along the route works, but spots near the Spanish Arch and around the Latin Quarter offer some of the best atmosphere and you’ll be steps from The House Hotel for a warm room afterwards.

Where to stay. The Macnas Parade weekend coincides with mid-term break for many Irish schools, so weekend stays book up early. A one- or two-night stay works well, with the parade as your evening anchor and Galway’s restaurants and bars to explore around it. Family rooms in particular get booked first, often by August or September. The parade is on a Sunday, so a Saturday-Sunday or Friday-Sunday stay is the most popular pattern.

Insider tip. Get to your viewing spot at least 30 minutes before the parade starts, crowds build quickly and the best vantage points fill up. Wrap up warm; late October evenings in Galway are cold, and you’ll be standing still for an hour or more. The route is most atmospheric in the Latin Quarter where the buildings narrow and the lighting design works best, so aim for that stretch if you can.

Galway Christmas Market transforms Eyre Square into one of Ireland’s most atmospheric festive destinations for six full weeks. Wooden chalets, mulled wine, festive food, artisan gifts, live music, and a traditional carousel create the kind of Christmas atmosphere that has people travelling from across Ireland and the UK to experience it. It’s a genuinely festive market, busy at weekends, more relaxed midweek, and beautifully lit after dark.

Where it happens. The market is in Eyre Square, around 5 minutes’ walk from The House Hotel, quite literally on our doorstep. The proximity is one of the strongest reasons to choose The House Hotel for a Christmas market visit: you can pop back to your room to drop off shopping or warm up between visits.

Where to stay. Christmas market weekends are among our busiest of the year. We’d recommend booking by September or October for the best choice of dates, particularly for the first weekends of December. Insider tip. Visit the market twice if you can, once during the day for food, drink, and atmosphere, and once after dark when the lighting transforms the entire square. The first two weekends of December are the busiest; if you prefer a calmer experience, aim for weekdays or November dates.

One of Europe’s longest-running literary festivals, Cúirt has been bringing celebrated writers, poets, and thinkers to Galway since 1985.  A quietly brilliant week of intimate readings, panel discussions, workshops, and late-night literary events that spill from formal venues into the city’s pubs and cafés. Most events take place at the Town Hall Theatre, the Galway Arts Centre, and the Galway City Library, all within a 5–10 minute walk of The House Hotel. April is one of Galway’s quieter months for tourism, making it an ideal time to experience the city. 

Baboró is one of the most thoughtfully programmed children’s arts festivals in Europe with theatre, dance, music, and interactive performance curated specifically for young audiences across different age groups, from toddlers to teenagers. It’s a genuine cultural experience for kids, not a tokenistic one, and parents tend to enjoy it as much as the children. Performances take place across the Town Hall Theatre, the Black Box Theatre, and smaller venues across the city centre, all within walking distance of The House Hotel. Beyond the festivals, Galway’s weekly weekend market behind St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church is one of the city’s most beloved traditions. Local food producers, craftspeople, bakers, and street-food traders set up from morning until early afternoon every Saturday and Sunday, a perfect anchor for a weekend stay at The House Hotel and a brilliant way to experience Galway at its most authentic. The market runs in the Latin Quarter, around 5 minutes’ walk from the hotel, Saturdays are the busiest and most vibrant, with the food and bakery stalls best browsed before 11am while selection is at its peak.

A: Staying in Galway city centre is by far the most convenient choice for any festival, as almost every major venue is within walking distance. For race week, the racecourse is a 10-minute taxi or shuttle ride from the city centre.

A: Booking timelines vary by festival. For the Galway International Arts Festival and Race Week — the two busiest periods, we recommend booking 6  months in advance for the best choice of rooms and rates. For the Oyster Festival and Christmas Market weekends, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually sufficient. Quieter festivals like Cúirt and the Comedy Festival can often be booked closer to the date, particularly midweek.

Q: Are there family-friendly festivals in Galway?

A: Yes. Baboró International Arts Festival for Children (October) is dedicated entirely to family audiences, with theatre, dance, and interactive performance programmed by age group.
