Macnas Halloween Parade Galway
Plan the parade, pick your viewing spot and stay a few minutes from the heart of Galway Halloween.
On Sunday 25 October 2026, giant puppets, live performance and after-dark spectacle take over Galway city centre for the Macnas Halloween Parade. This year is the company’s 40th anniversary, and the new production is called Fiáin. It is free to watch, it draws crowds of up to 80,000, and it is the headline event of the Galway Halloween weekend.
At The House Hotel we are on Spanish Parade in the Latin Quarter, a few minutes’ walk from the streets the parade passes through. That makes the evening simple: head out early, find your spot, watch the parade, then walk back once the crowds start to clear.

Autumn Break
Autumn in Galway has street performers on Shop Street, the Spanish Arch around the corner and no car needed once you've checked in.
Autumn BreaksWhat is Macnas?
Macnas is Galway’s street theatre company, founded in the city in 1986. The name means “joyful abandon” in Irish, which is a fair warning about the scale and energy of what it brings to the streets.
Each year Macnas builds a new story for Halloween with original giant puppets, performers, musicians and a specially composed score. It is less a procession than a piece of theatre on the move, with the city as the stage and the crowd as part of it.
2026 marks forty years of Macnas, and the anniversary production is called Fiáin – pronounced fee-awn, meaning wild. The company describes it as a celebration of the wild elements of the West of Ireland and the wild energy that takes over the streets for one night.
When and Where Does the Macnas Parade Happen?
The Macnas Halloween Parade takes place on Sunday 25 October 2026, starting at 5.30pm. It runs for roughly an hour and a half to two hours, and it is free, no tickets or booking is needed.
The parade moves through Galway city centre. In recent years the route has run from the university, across the Salmon Weir Bridge, down through the city centre and on towards the Claddagh.
The city centre closes to traffic along the route for the evening, and bus services divert. If you are staying with us, walking is the simplest option.
Where is the Best Place to Watch the Macnas Parade
There is no single best place to watch. It depends on whether you want atmosphere, space, or step-free access. Macnas designates family viewing areas and an accessible viewing area each year.
Best for Atmosphere
The Latin Quarter puts you close to the action with real parade-night atmosphere, but the narrow streets fill early.
Best for Families
Father Griffin Road is a designated family viewing area with more room than the narrow city-centre streets.
Best for Accessible Viewing
Galway Cathedral is the designated accessible viewing area, with level ground and space for wheelchairs and buggies.
Wherever you choose, aim to be in place at least 30 minutes before the parade starts. Late October evenings in Galway are cold and often wet, so bring warm layers, waterproofs and comfortable shoes.
Halloween in Galway Beyond the Parade
The parade is the headline, but it sits inside a bigger programme. Gaillimh Ah-Boo! is Galway City Council’s citywide Halloween and Samhain festival, part of Fáilte Ireland’s Home of Halloween campaign, and it runs across the city for roughly ten days around the bank holiday weekend.
Expect street performance, storytelling, family workshops, seasonal food events and late openings across the city centre, with the Macnas parade as the anchor event on the Sunday evening.
If you are staying more than one night, leave some of the time unplanned. Walk the medieval streets of the Latin Quarter, stop for an early dinner, and enjoy the city. Our team can advise on what activities are on while you are here.
Staying for the Parade and October Midterm Week
The 2026 dates line up well for a longer stay. The parade is on Sunday 25 October, the bank holiday falls on Monday 26 October, most Irish schools are on midterm from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, and Halloween itself is Saturday 31 October.
Our triple rooms suit two adults and one child. For larger groups, the Apartment Family Suite sleeps up to six across three bedrooms, which works well for two families travelling together or for three generations in one booking.
If you would like help choosing the right room, call us on +091 538 900 and we will talk it through.

Family Breaks
The House Hotel sits in the middle of Galway's Latin Quarter, so days out start at the front door and tired legs are only a few minutes from the room.

What is Macnas in English?
Macnas is an Irish word meaning “joyful abandon”. It is also the name of Galway’s street theatre company, founded in 1986 and known worldwide for large-scale outdoor performance. Each Halloween Macnas creates an original story with giant puppets, performers, music and a new score, turning the streets of Galway into a moving theatre.
Where is the best place to watch the Macnas parade?
It depends n what you need. The Latin Quarter has the most atmosphere but fills quickly. Macnas designates a family viewing area and an accessible viewing area each year which in recent years have been around Father Griffin Road and Galway Cathedral. Check the official route and arrive early whichever spot you pick.
Is the Macnas Halloween Parade free?
Yes. The parade is free and open to all, with no ticket required. That is part of why it draws crowds of up to 80,000 people. Because it is free and unticketed, the main viewing areas fill well before the parade starts, so allow time to get into the city centre and find a comfortable spot.
Is the Macnas parade suitable for children?
Yes, and many families go. It is worth knowing what to expect: large crowds, loud music, darkness and oversized puppets designed to be a little unsettling. The designated family viewing area has more room than the narrow city-centre streets and is the easier choice with a buggy or younger children. Arrive early, dress warmly, and agree on a meeting point in case your group gets separated.
Where should I stay for the Macnas parade?
A city-centre hotel within walking distance of the route makes the evening far simpler, particularly as streets close to traffic and buses divert. The House Hotel is on Spanish Parade in the Latin Quarter, around three minutes from Shop Street, so you can walk out to the parade and walk back afterwards without arranging a taxi.
