Galway Race Week is the single busiest week of the year for hotels in Galway city centre. We recommend booking at least 6 months in advance for the best choice of rooms and rates  by January or February for the following year’s race week. Last-minute availability is rare and usually limited to higher-rate room categories.

Many guests stay for two or three nights rather than the full week, which gives the best balance of experience and budget. The most popular nights are Wednesday (Galway Plate day) and Thursday (Ladies’ Day), so a Wednesday-Friday or Thursday-Saturday pattern works well for most race-goers. Book midweek for more availability than the Friday-Sunday pattern.

Galway Racecourse is in Ballybrit, around 5km from Galway city centre. From The House Hotel, you have three good options for getting to the races each day:

Race Week Shuttle Bus: A dedicated race-week shuttle runs from Eyre Square (a 3-minute walk from the hotel) to the racecourse and back throughout the day during festival week. It’s the most popular option, straightforward, reliable, and enables you to avoid parking. Tickets are typically available on the bus or in advance from the racecourse website.

Taxi: A taxi from The House Hotel to Galway Racecourse takes around 10 minutes (can be up to 20mins at peak times). Pre-book taxis for the return journey, particularly for the busy days.

Driving: Parking is available at the racecourse, but traffic to and from Ballybrit is very heavy on race days. We generally don’t recommend driving unless necessary. Limited parking is also available at the hotel. Please contact us in advance to check availability during race week.

The Galway Races runs across seven days, with each day having its own character. The biggest fixtures are:

Wednesday – Galway Plate Day: One of the festival’s two flagship races. Strong racing, big crowds, electric atmosphere. A great day for serious racegoers.

Thursday – Ladies’ Day: The most fashion-forward day of the week, with the Best Dressed Lady competition drawing entrants from across Ireland. Hat hire is widespread; take it as seriously or as lightly as you want. The atmosphere is extraordinary.

Friday – Galway Hurdle Day: Another major fixture with strong racing and an excellent crowd. Often a slightly more relaxed atmosphere than the midweek peak.

Saturday and Sunday: The festival winds down with family-friendly racing days. Good for first-time race-goers who want to experience the atmosphere without the midweek intensity.

Monday and Tuesday: Quieter days, often better value for tickets and a good way to ease into the week before the major fixtures.

Dress code: Smart casual is the floor; many race-goers go more formal, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. There is no strict dress code at the racecourse, but most attendees dress for the occasion.
