Eyre Square Galway
Eyre Square Hotels, Galway
Eyre Square in Galway City Centre, also known as John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, is our main public park in the city. Eyre Square is surrounded on most sides with traffic and is located beside Galway train station. It is home to the ever-popular Galway Christmas Markets in November and December each year & Eyre Square is only a short walk from The House Hotel.
History tells us the origin of the square comes from medieval open space in front of a town gate. Markets would have taken place and the space was officially presented to the city in 1710 by Mayor Edward Eyre.
Following the visit of John F Kennedy to Galway in 1963 the square was officially renamed John F Kennedy Memorial Park. The flags of all the Tribes of Galway are also present at the north of the square. One of Eyre Square’s most prominent residents, a replica ofthe original statue of Pádraic O’Conaire was recently unveiled back on the square.
